Ear Surgery (Otoplasty)

Otoplasty is a surgery that is performed to correct a deformity of the ears. There are several types of ear deformities, the most common being prominent ears also known as “bat ears”. There are several variations of treating ear deformity depending upon the type and severity.

Typically, Otoplasty is performed to correct the protrusion of the ears and place them in a more “normal”, less prominent position. It should be noted that both ears are never exactly alike, even in the “normal” state, and that perfect symmetry is not a reasonable expectation.

Some patients are concerned that the operation might affect their hearing. The operation it self is safe and has no harmful effects upon the hearing mechanism.

What to expect from the consultation

During this visit you should expect to sit at length with your doctor and discuss your goals for surgery. It is important to be informative about:

  • Past surgeries
  • Past and current medical conditions
  • Any medications and vitamins you are currently taking
  • Any and all supplements you are using
  • Allergies to drugs, foods, dyes and rubber

How the surgery is performed

The procedure is usually performed under general anesthesia but in adults, surgery could be performed under local anesthetic. The operation takes approximately 1 and 1/2 hours to complete and is not typically painful.

The procedure is performed by making an incision on the back side of the ear and removing a small segment of skin. The exposed cartilage is then thinned or cut so that the ear can be placed in the desired position with a more normal configuration.

Stitches are used to hold the cartilage in place and to close the skin incision. A bulky type dressing is wrapped around the head, covering both ears for protection. This also helps to minimize swelling and discomfort.

What to expect after the surgery

Discomfort after surgery is usually minimal. Dressings will be left in place for a period of one week. Patients are advised to wear a headband or bandana for another few weeks. The ears will appear swollen; however this is normal and may be evident for up to 4 weeks. Sutures are removed seven to ten days later. The scars are completely invisible.

My procedure went great and now, I feel 10 years younger, and notice that I am catching the eyes of my man, and others too, what a great feeling ;) Thanks Dr. Ali"
