Breast augmentation is one of the most commonly performed plastic surgery procedures. Breast augmentation can help those women who feel their breasts are smaller in size. Although some women naturally have small breasts, other reasons such as pregnancy, weight loss, and aging may adversely affect shape and size of the breasts. It is a procedure that yields immediate gratification.
Breast augmentation is a cosmetic procedure that uses implants to enhance the shape and size of the breasts. Breast implants are available in different sizes and shapes. Women now have the option to choose between saline or silicone breast implants. Breast enhancement greatly improves self esteem. Patients feel very confident in their swim suits and certain dresses. Patients also report improved interpersonal relationships after breast enhancement.
During this visit you should expect to sit at length with your doctor and discuss your goals for surgery. It is important to be informative about:
Breast augmentation is performed under general anesthesia. Surgery takes 1 1/2 to 2 hours and patients are able to go home after the procedure. Surgeons use different techniques to obtain the desired result. You and your surgeon will decide which technique will give you the best result.
The incision is small and is placed in an inconspicuous area: under the arm, the lower half of the areola or underneath the breast. The implant is either placed behind the muscle or in front of it. To ensure a successful outcome it is imperative to choose the right implant size.
We inject long term local anesthetic at the end of the procedure which makes recovery almost completely painless. Some of our patients have gone out for dinner or a movie the same day, following surgery.
During the first few days after surgery you will feel some discomfort but it is easily manageable with pain medication. You will be wearing a sport style bra that zips or fastens in the front for approximately 6 weeks. Most of the swelling will subside after the first 2 weeks. Patients are advised not to engage in any strenuous activity and to avoid lifting anything heavier than 5 lbs.
