Botox® injection is the most commonly performed non-surgical procedure to refresh the face by eliminating wrinkles. Botox is a purified protein that blocks transmission of nerve impulses to the muscle, thus paralyzing that muscle. This protein is derived from botulinum toxin and is used in very minute quantities to paralyze certain small muscles of the face.
These muscles, often known as muscles of facial expression, produce wrinkling in different parts of the face such as forehead creases, frown lines, crow’s feet around the eyes and bands in the neck. Botox is very effective in reducing or eliminating these wrinkles and results in a refreshed appearance.
The effects of Botox are temporary and last for approximately four months. Botox is also very effective in decreasing sweating when injected in areas such as the armpits. This can be a great relief from social embarrassment for many people who experience excessive sweating.
What to expect after the injection
Most people find that the injections cause only minor discomfort. Immediately after the injection, there may be some redness and swelling but this usually subsides in 2-24 hours. Side effects of this treatment, though rare, are headache, swelling, redness and flu-like symptoms.
Occasionally, temporary drooping of the eyebrow or eyelid may occur. These symptoms generally occur within the first week and may last up to a few weeks but subside on their own.
Good results may be obtained after a single injection and typically last for 2 to 4 months. It is best to perform a Botox® injection every three months. It takes 2 to 4 days to see the full results of Botox®.
