Breast augmentation is one of the most commonly performed plastic surgery procedures, and is often performed to enlarge the breasts. However, that is not the only reason for a breast augmentation; pregnancy, weight loss and aging may adversely affect shape and size of the breasts, and an augmentation can help to improve the appearance of the breasts.
A breast augmentation is a cosmetic surgical procedure that uses implants to enhance the shape and size of the breasts. Breast implants are available in different sizes and shapes. Women now have the option to choose between saline or silicone breast implants. Breast enhancement can greatly improve self-esteem, helping patients feel more confident in their swim suits and certain dresses.
How a Breast Augmentation is Performed
Breast augmentation is performed under general anesthesia. Surgery takes 1 1/2 to 2 hours and patients are able to go home after the procedure. Surgeons use different techniques to obtain the desired result. You and your surgeon will decide which technique will give you the best result.
The incision is small and is placed in an inconspicuous area: under the arm, the lower half of the areola or underneath the breast. The implant is either placed behind the muscle or in front of it. To ensure a successful outcome it is imperative to choose the right implant size.
We inject long term local anesthetic at the end of the procedure which makes recovery almost completely painless. Some of our patients have gone out for dinner or a movie the same day, following surgery.
What to Expect After Surgery
During the first few days after surgery you will feel some discomfort but it is easily manageable with pain medication. You will be wearing a sport style bra that zips or fastens in the front for approximately 6 weeks. Most of the swelling will subside after the first 2 weeks. Patients are advised not to engage in any strenuous activity and to avoid lifting anything heavier than 5 lbs.
